Now I never ask for people who read this blog to do anything. But today I am. So if you read the next paragraph and feel in agreeance, please head over and sign the petition as I have done.
So as I mentioned, there has been alot going on in medical terms overseas, in regards to Prof. Zamboni's research into a very simple surgical procedure to assist sufferers of Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Australia has some 20,000 sufferers of this disease, which I am fairly confident everyone reading this will have some knowledge of. As you will have guessed by now, this is what afflicts Inadequate Boyfriend. Long term readers of this blog, and those who read my last blog will suddenly have many things fall into place as this little penny drops, and alot of what I have said will suddenly make sense now!
Anyway, basically this procedure is fairly straight forward. It appears that MS patients have (and this is the idiots guide for simplicity, folks) a build up of iron deposits in the veins in their neck, which restricts the flow of blood away from the brain, and damages the blood/brain barrier.
Dr Zamboni has discovered that by simply opening up these veins, and restoring proper blood flow, the majority of symptoms of MS can be reversed, or at least significantly improved.
It is a fairly simple surgery, entering through the groin, and is kinda like the way they re-open your arteries after having a heart attack, but in your neck instead of your chest.
Currently, Australia has only one trial being conducted. This is in Perth, and is for a grand total of 20 people. Thats right, TWENTY.
For IB, his best option at the moment is to travel to the US, Italy or Israel.
I honestly do not know why we can't research this here. We have smart people in Australia! We have hundreds of MS patients that I know of who are literally CHOMPING AT THE BIT to be a part of this.
Yes we know there are risks. Yes we have read copious amounts of confusing and complicated literature about the procedure, the trials, the results, the LOT! And everyone is willing to try.
So please, have a look at CCSVI (chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency) for yourself, and head over to HERE and sign the petition.
You have no idea how much this could mean to MS sufferers like IB, and those who live with them, care for them, and sometimes hate their guts but still want to see them able to walk more than 50m without falling, see clearly at night, not have their arms and legs jerking every time they sit still for more than 30 minutes, to live pain free, and much, much more.
Even if some of them are asshats. Nobody deserves MS. And to think such a breakthrough is out there........ well.... IMHO if we are not looking into it, well thats fucking criminal.
PS - it may interest you to know that Sydney Uni discovered basically the same thing as Dr Zamboni some 8+ years ago, yet did not have the funding to persue the research. Now if THAT doesnt make your blood boil, well, I dunno what to say.
Go. Sign. Now.
That is all.
*****edit*****
The trial being conducted in Perth is not actually doing the procedure, merely seeing if these 20 people have the iron deposits in the first place. For anyone who has MS, this scan is currently accessable in both Melbourne VIC and Edgecliff NSW - email me if you want the details on how to get this done.
